Now step into today’s virtual worlds, where you can leave your body behind and become on an entirely new virtual self – man, woman or hybrid. People can explore this 3D interactive opportunities to escape the confines of their bodies and explore the distant reaches of their minds, and meet other people in a new environment where you can play, talk, walk, run, fly, have sex, watch movies and do business all in a virtual, yet real, way.

A world free from the dangers of disease – a ‘post war, pre-aids innocence’. Major businesses are exploring the possibilities with their own virtual islands, offices, shops and community areas as they learn more about the significance of virtual worlds and its 3D environment which gives glimpses of the next stage of web development, Web 3.0.

There are several virtual worlds including Second Life (SL) and Entropia. SL has 7 million claimed members, 83,000 premium residents, with on average 40,000 active at any one time (Keegan, 2007). McKinsey & Co claim SL wil be indispensible an d is on teh cust of a major expansion (April 2008).

BBC have screened the Money Programme in Second Life; Sky News have opened a replica of its studio in Second Life; Reuters have a presence there; MTV premiere their tv shows inside Virtual Laguna Beach; Audi offer virtual test dives; ; IBM have sponsored a ballet; Blarney Pub (in Virtual Dublin) offers virtual Irish Coffees. Virtual World, Second Life, has just had it’s first real world millionaire who made her money from selling property in the virtual world.
